FAQ
Do I need a Bluesky account?
Section titled “Do I need a Bluesky account?”You need an Atmosphere account, and a Bluesky account is one (the most common one). Any AT Protocol provider works. If you don’t have an account, the sign-in page can create one with a provider of your choice. You can also read as a guest with no account at all; see Getting started.
Is Skyreader free?
Section titled “Is Skyreader free?”Yes, while Skyreader is in beta. The free plan is meant to be genuinely usable: up to 100 feeds, 100 saved links a month, highlights, the daily magazine, the linkblog and offline reading. The Supporter plan raises the limits and adds newsletters by email, search, and PDFs and books.
Can I keep using my RSS app?
Section titled “Can I keep using my RSS app?”Yes. Skyreader can sync NetNewsWire, Reeder, ReadKit, Unread and other apps that speak the Google Reader API, with read and starred state kept in step. See Other reader apps.
Is my reading public?
Section titled “Is my reading public?”No. Read state, saves, highlights, and notes are private to you. A few things are public by your choice: your linkblog (that’s its point), recommends, the reading rooms you join, and anything you publish, sync or back externally. Your data has the complete list.
Why does Skyreader ask for permission when I turn something on?
Section titled “Why does Skyreader ask for permission when I turn something on?”Sign-in only asks for what Skyreader needs to keep your reading in order. Features that write to other Atmospheric apps, like backing your saves with Semble or Margin, publishing a linkblog, or posting feedback, ask for their own permission the first time you use them. Choose Allow access, confirm on your account provider’s page, and you land back where you were, still signed in. Skyreader remembers what you’ve allowed, so signing in again later asks for the same set.
A feed hasn’t shown anything new in a while. Is it broken?
Section titled “A feed hasn’t shown anything new in a while. Is it broken?”Usually the feed just hasn’t published. Skyreader crawls feeds continuously and surfaces new items within minutes of them appearing. If Skyreader can’t fetch a feed, for example because the site blocks automated access, opening the feed shows why at the top. If a site moved or removed its feed, the feed’s row in Manage sources is the place to check and update it.
If you notice a live feed that isn’t working in Skyreader, please open a feedback.
A feed only shows the first paragraph. Can I read the rest?
Section titled “A feed only shows the first paragraph. Can I read the rest?”Yes. Many feeds send only the opening of each article. At the end of a short one, choose Fetch full article (or press Shift F) and Skyreader brings in the whole text. On an article that already looks complete, it’s in the ⋯ menu. You need to be signed in.
What’s the difference between the Queue and the Shelf?
Section titled “What’s the difference between the Queue and the Shelf?”They’re two views of the same saves. The Queue is what to read next: archive something when you’re done and it leaves. The Shelf is what you keep and return to, like books and references: finishing something doesn’t take it off. See Your Library.
What are Semble and Margin? Do I need them?
Section titled “What are Semble and Margin? Do I need them?”They’re other Atmospheric apps for collecting and annotating links in public. You don’t need either. If you use one, Skyreader can keep your saves or a collection in step with it, which makes that list public. See Words you’ll see.
A saved article came in truncated. Can I get the full text?
Section titled “A saved article came in truncated. Can I get the full text?”Often, yes. The Chrome or Firefox extension reads the page in your own browser, where you may have access the server doesn’t. Open the article on its site, then use the extension’s Save this page; if you’d saved it before, re-saving upgrades the stored copy with the full text.
What works offline?
Section titled “What works offline?”Reading your feeds and saved articles, marking read, highlighting, notes, and the daily magazine. Changes queue up and sync when you’re back online. Adding sources, sharing to your linkblog, and changing sync settings need a connection.
How do I get my subscriptions out?
Section titled “How do I get my subscriptions out?”Settings → Library & privacy → Export OPML downloads your whole list in a format every feed reader understands.
How do I delete my account?
Section titled “How do I delete my account?”Email [email protected]. Skyreader removes your data from its servers. Your Atmosphere account is yours and stays as it is, along with anything on your PDS. To keep a copy first, see Your data.
Are there keyboard shortcuts?
Section titled “Are there keyboard shortcuts?”Yes. Press ? in Skyreader to see them, or read Keyboard shortcuts.
How do I delete my linkblog?
Section titled “How do I delete my linkblog?”Settings → Linkblog → Delete linkblog removes every link post from your PDS. You can restore the linkblog later to share again, but deleted posts don’t come back.
How do I report a problem or send feedback?
Section titled “How do I report a problem or send feedback?”You can leave public feedback (questions, feature ideas, bugs) on Skyreader’s userinput board.
For other questions you can email: [email protected].
